Welcome to Christian Charity World as we look at trying to believe.
Anselm of Canterbury 1033 - 1109
"Credo ut intelligam"
"For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand"
Through out our education we are striving to understand. Understanding the logic behind mathematics, getting our heads around science, comprehending law, languages, history; the list goes on. When we can see why 2 x 3 = 6 we believe it. Prove that electricity makes a light bulb shine then we believe it. Our education system sells the idea that proving and understanding will make us believe.
As Christians we are likely to be different from the rest of the world. We will act differently because we act out of love and compassion for other people, trying to live our lives according to the example set by our Saviour Jesus Christ. We are likely to be less aggressive than others, less competitive, probably more trusting and optimistic.
And we will think differently.
Believe first. That's why Jesus told Thomas the doubter, "blessed are you because in seeing you believe, but more blessed are those who believe though they do not see." The quote of Anselm of Canterbury stated above was first presented to me at an Alpha Course. It was one of those light bulb moments for me, the pastor had turned on the switch.
Many people have tried to study the Bible and research the life and teachings of Jesus Christ but never come to faith. They tragically miss the point. They never experience the spirituality of the Holy Ghost because it goes beyond understanding. It's about living the Christian life, experiencing it. By accepting Jesus Christ, believing in his amazing sacrifice and opening up our hearts to him we allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in us. And when we have Jesus in our hearts we change. We want to do good works, we want to be closer to Jesus and we are enthused to learn more. And as we read, study scripture and converse with other Christians it all begins to fall into place as our experiences give meaning to the words.
Believe first, live the life and the understanding will follow.
