Be It Essential Food and Drink Or The Luxuries in Life, You Can Still Be Helping Others AroundThe World.
We can so easily take food and drink for granted. For most of us it is readily available and we must thank God for all that he provides.
And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
There are many references to food and drink within scripture and we can be shown to use these in different ways. In the Old Testament livestock was used as sacrifices whether it be used as an offering to please God or as atonement when somebody had sinned. The Passover as depicted in Exodus meant that all the people of Israel had to shed the blood of a lamb and spread this over their door frames. The Passover is still to this day an important feast of the Jews. The birth of Jesus Christ is a celebration and a feast at Christmas not only for Christians but much of the Western World. Food and drink is used for the commemoration of many religious festivals throughout the world and is seen as a pleasurable indulgence on such occasions.
Back to the Old Testament, God told Noah what was good to eat (Genesis 9:3) but then God gave Moses a dietary plan as seen in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 which declared food such as shellfish, pork and birds of prey as being forbidden to eat.
It was the Resurrection of Christ which changed the views of food from a Christian perspective. For those that believe that Christ died to save all from their sins, the old Mosiac laws became less meaningful and this particularly included the law on what food was considered to be unclean.
Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.
Today we eat according to both taste and what is socially acceptable. However this is still a luxury to some. Around the world famine deprives many millions of people from a very basic diet. The scourge of poverty keeps food bowls empty and drought scorches the earth preventing any crops being grown to sustain human life. People die of hunger.
